YUMI<\/span> (<\/span>Your<\/span> Universal<\/span> Multiboot<\/span> Installer)<\/span> is a<\/span> Windows based<\/span> program<\/span> that creates and<\/span> prepares<\/span> USB pendrives<\/span> to boot<\/span> multiple operating<\/span> systems<\/span>, antivirus utilities,<\/span> disc<\/span> cloning tools<\/span>, diagnostics<\/span>, and many other<\/span> live<\/span> versions<\/span> (<\/span>Multiple USB<\/span> boot<\/span> creator<\/span> -Multiboot<\/span> –<\/span>). It is useful<\/span> to carry<\/span> multiple bootaable operating systems or applications in a single<\/span> device<\/span>.<\/span> In<\/span> the same<\/span> pendrive<\/span> can have<\/span> Ubuntu<\/span>, Kaspersky Rescue Disk<\/span> or<\/span> Windows OSs<\/span>,<\/span> if you have the<\/span> ISO<\/span> image.<\/span> If<\/span> you do not,<\/span> YUMI can help you to downlad in some cases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding<\/span> operation,<\/span> YUMI<\/span> is very easy<\/span> and intuitive to use<\/span>: choose<\/span> the unit of your pen<\/span>drive<\/span>, the distribution or LiveCD<\/span> to copy and then<\/span> its file.<\/span> A<\/span> click on Create<\/em><\/span> and<\/span> YUMI will convert your<\/span> removable memory<\/span> in a store of distributions with its own<\/span> boot menu.<\/span> It uses<\/span> syslinux<\/span> to boot<\/span> distributions<\/span> stored on the<\/span> USB<\/span> device and<\/span> uses<\/span> GRUB<\/span> to boot multiple<\/span> ISOs\u00a0<\/span>files from<\/span> USB<\/span>, if necessary<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Except for<\/span> some distributions<\/span> (as,<\/span> for example,<\/span>\u00a0Windows<\/span> Vista\/<\/span>7\/8<\/span>\/<\/span>8.1 releases)<\/span>, all files<\/span> are<\/span> stored orderly in the folder\u00a0<\/span>‘<\/span>multiboot’ to<\/span> make a USB<\/span> Multiboot<\/span> well organized<\/span>. The<\/span> installed distributions can be<\/span> also<\/span> uninstalled<\/span> from the same program<\/span>.<\/p>\n

NATURE OF THE PROBLEM<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

YUMI<\/span> does not allow<\/span> to include more than one installation disk\/ISO simultaneously\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span> the latest versions<\/span> of<\/span> <\/span>Windows<\/span>.<\/span> You can create<\/span> from the<\/span> selection menu of distributions,<\/span> and include<\/span> at the same<\/span> time in a<\/span> multiboot USB<\/span>, a boot and installation disk<\/span> forl<\/span> Windows<\/span> XP<\/span> with another<\/span> one of any of<\/span> the later versions<\/span> (<\/span>Vista\/7\/8<\/span>\/<\/span>8.1).<\/span> The problem arises when<\/span> you want to include<\/span> in the same<\/span> USB<\/span> device<\/span> two or more installation discs<\/span>\/<\/span> ISOs<\/span> of Windows Vista,<\/span> Windows<\/span> 7 or<\/span> Windows 8<\/span> \/<\/span> 8.1.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although apparently<\/span> the selection menu<\/span> gives<\/span> the<\/span> impression that it<\/span> could create<\/span> additional<\/span> and<\/span> consecutive<\/span> multiple\u00a0<\/span>bootable<\/span> installation<\/span> disks of various<\/span> versions of<\/span> Microsoft OS<\/span> (Windows<\/em><\/span> Vista\/<\/span>7\/8<\/span> <\/em>Installer<\/em>)<\/span>, in practice,<\/span> you can only<\/span> create an<\/span> installation disk for<\/span> one of the following<\/span>: Windows Vista,<\/span> Windows<\/span> 7, Windows<\/span> 8 \/<\/span> 8.1.<\/span><\/p>\n

As noted<\/span> above,<\/span> not<\/span> all distributions<\/span> are stored separately<\/span> and independently<\/span> within the<\/span> ‘<\/span>multiboot’ folder. For<\/span> Windows<\/span> Vista\/<\/span>7\/8<\/span>\/<\/span>8.1,<\/span> YUMI<\/span> unpacks<\/span> in<\/span> the root of the<\/span> pendrive<\/span>. Therefore<\/span>, installing a second<\/span> Windows<\/span> crushes<\/span> on the<\/span> previous and generates<\/span> inconsistencies in the<\/span> booting process what<\/span> leads to<\/span> a not working installation<\/span>.<\/span> However<\/span>, any of them is compatible with<\/span> Windows<\/span> XP<\/span> installer<\/span> (Windows<\/em><\/span> XP<\/span> <\/em>Installer<\/em>)<\/span> created<\/span> by<\/span> YUMI<\/span>. In fact,<\/span> the menu<\/span> appears as a<\/span> distinct<\/span> option<\/span> selection<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\nPROCEDURE FOR CREATING A “MULTI-WINDOWS” USB ON YUMI<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To<\/span> have several<\/span> installers<\/span> of<\/span> Windows<\/span> Vista\/<\/span>7\/8<\/span>\/<\/span>8.1<\/span> on a ‘<\/span>multi<\/span>–<\/span>Windows’ USB memory within the<\/span> YUMI environment<\/span>\u00a0 we have to\u00a0add<\/span> a number of<\/span> menu files<\/span> configured to boot<\/span> the different<\/span> Windows installers<\/span> independently<\/span>.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00bb The tools needed:
\n– YUMI<\/a>.
\n– FiraDisk<\/a> (required for<\/span> windows<\/span><\/span>).
\n– Any one of the distributions that YUMI installs form its dropdown menu, eg Ultimate Boot CD<\/a>, for creating the initial YUMI enviroment.
\n– The ISO images of the installation files\/CDs for the Microsoft OSs that we want to load in the pendrive.<\/p>\n

\u25cf Format the flash drive and install with YUMI<\/span> the selected distribution (eg. UBCD). Once done, you can, if you want, delete it in YUMI uninstall mode.<\/p>\n

\u25cf<\/span> Copy<\/span> the image iso. installation files<\/span><\/span> of\u00a0<\/span>Windows versions<\/span><\/span> that you want to add<\/span> in the folder<\/span> ‘<\/span>\/multiboot<\/em>\/<\/span>ISOS<\/span>‘.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u25cf In the<\/span> ‘<\/span>multiboot<\/em>‘ folder<\/span><\/strong> of the pendrive<\/span>, open\/<\/span>edit<\/span> the ‘<\/span>syslinux.cfg<\/em>‘<\/span> file with any text editor<\/span>. Add the following<\/span> and save<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u25cf\u00a0Now,<\/span> enter in the<\/span> ‘<\/span>menu<\/em>‘ <\/strong><\/span>folder<\/strong><\/span> and<\/span> create a file<\/span> ‘<\/span>windows.cfg<\/em>‘<\/span>. Add the following lines<\/span>\u00a0and save<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/span><\/span>: To do this<\/span> just<\/span> create a<\/span> .txt<\/span> file<\/span>, add the contents<\/span> and<\/span> rename the file<\/span>. Do not<\/span> forget to leave<\/span> a space between each<\/span> block of text.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n
\u25cf<\/span> Also in the<\/span> ‘<\/span>menu<\/em>‘ <\/strong><\/span>folder<\/strong><\/span>,<\/span> create<\/span> .lst<\/span><\/em> files for each of<\/span> <\/span>the operating systems<\/span> that<\/span> is intended to<\/span> integrate into the<\/span> pendrive<\/span>.<\/span> As examples<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n
– For<\/span> Windows<\/span> <\/strong>XP<\/strong>,<\/span> create<\/span> ‘<\/span>windowsXP.lst<\/em>‘, add the following content<\/span> and save<\/span>:<\/p>\n

\nSimilarly<\/span> you could create<\/span> another file<\/span> for<\/span> the x64 version<\/span>: ‘<\/span>windows8x64.lst<\/em>‘. This way also allows you to install Windows10<\/strong> versions<\/span> (!!!).<\/span><\/p>\n
Note<\/span><\/span>: For these examples, the names of the<\/span> ISO<\/span> images<\/span> of Windows XP<\/span>, Windows 7 and<\/span> Windows 8<\/span> would be<\/span> WINXP_X86.ISO<\/span>, WIN7_X86<\/span>–<\/span>X64.ISO and<\/span> win8_x86.ISO, respectively<\/span>.<\/p>\n
\u25cf\u00a0Adding \u2018FiraDisk\u2019 drivers<\/span><\/strong>. Download the file containing the FiraDisk drivers from HERE<\/a><\/strong> (own version adapted to this procedure) and unzip it into the root of the pendrive. The file \u2018AutoUnattend.xml<\/em>\u2019 and the ‘FiraDisk<\/em>‘ folder with all its contents are added to the root.<\/p>\n
If you have done everything correctly you should have all Windows OSs ready for booting from a pendrive.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
Furthermore,<\/span> you can still go on adding other bootable distributions from YUMI.<\/span><\/p>\n
Note<\/span>: Windows<\/span> 7 gives<\/span> problems with<\/span> USB<\/span> 3.0 ports<\/span> (<\/span>not with the<\/span> USB<\/span> 3.0<\/span> flash drives<\/span>)<\/span>, so you<\/span> must boot from<\/span> a 2.0 port<\/span> to avoid mistakes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
